Ingmar Rentzhog's post

COP28 President Al Jaber recently stated, 'There is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says that the phase-out of fossil fuel is what’s going to achieve 1.5°C.' This statement stands in stark contrast to the position of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who asserted, 'The 1.5-degree limit is only possible if we ultimately stop burning all fossil fuels. Not reduce. Not abate. Phase out – with a clear timeframe aligned with 1.5 degrees.'
The third day of negotiations was marked by the exhilarating news that a majority of nations have called for a clear phase-out of fossil fuels. This is in spite of the startling claim from COP28 President Al Jaber, suggesting that phasing out fossil fuels would 'take us back to the caves.'
In my closing remarks on December 3, I expressed optimism about the growing momentum for phasing out fossil fuels. I also did not hold back in my criticism of Al Jaber's position and leaders like Lula da Silva, who are using the COP28 meeting to announce new oil deals.
