Post 968: National Farm Animals Day. Big Ag is one of the largest opponents of climate change regulation - but its greenhouse gas emissions aren't the only threat to the environment. . It's a lot easier to pin air pollution on cars and trucks rather than pigs and cattle, but it doesn't mean that farm animals are free from releasing dangerous chemicals. On top of methane production (one of the most potent greenhouse gases), livestock farms produce an estimated 70% of the United States' ammonia emissions. There is no standard way for government agencies to measure the emissions of individual barns, feedlots, and fields - meaning that most of these cases aren't required to get permits for the chemicals they release. . Another large issue is contributions to water pollution. While the Clean Water Act did its job in securing most waterways from large-scale industrial waste, agricultural runoff isn't adequately monitored under the legislation. According to the EPA, agriculture is the biggest contaminator of the nation's rivers and streams, thanks to manure runoff and lagoon seepage. . .
