New Proto-Standard for Carbon Accounting

To combat Climate Change, we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon Accounting was introduced as a way to measure this reduction to ensure all sectors of society are on target. Unfortunately, there is no rigorous standard for Carbon Accounting...until now! From a government perspective, this type of accounting is essential if they want to introduce Carbon Pricing/Taxes and also to support Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms. From an organizational perspective, it is essential to support interventions to reduce emissions internally, by identifying emissions on an individual product/service basis and for all internal processes, so that organizations can redesign products/services, reengineer processes, use fewer high emissions resources and use low emissions supplies. Pleased to announce that the E-liability Institute have just published their draft Proto-Standard for Carbon Accounting. Please see notification below. 🚨 New Proto-Standard for Carbon Accounting – Feedback Needed! 🚨 We’ve just released a draft proto-standard for carbon accounting and auditing using the E-liability method, and we need your insights! This dynamic and transaction-based approach is built on trusted financial accounting practices and aims to provide real-time, cradle-to-gate emissions tracking for products and services. The method allows companies, governments, and organizations to factor decarbonization into their operational and policy decisions. 🔑 Key highlights: - Supports real-time decision-making based on actual emissions data. - Can be easily integrated into existing accounting practices. - Aims to harmonize global efforts to develop robust carbon-accounting standards. We invite all stakeholders to review the document and share their feedback to help us refine the proto-standard. 📄 Download the proto-standard here:

This approach will not only strengthen trust among stakeholders but also accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy by aligning efforts across different industries.

@rashid_kamau - thanks Rashid and great point. Yes this alignment can occur with a standard way of calculating embedded emissions in individual products/services that naturally flow through the entire value chain 😁

Establishing rigorous guidelines will enhance transparency and accountability across sectors, fostering a more unified and effective approach to climate change mitigation.

@walter_lungayi - thanks Walter, yes transparency and accountability are very important. As I just replied to Rashid, the key is getting that at the individual products/service basis. I was surprised to discover that a very large auto company calculates this by taking total global emissions for the company divided by total vehicles produced, no differentiation between types of vehicles, location of production, type of production etc.
