It was only till 2012 that 40% of the electricity output in the United Kingdom came from coal. And now look at today. They have shut down their last ever coal plant forever.
Coal-fired power plant in the United Kingdom
That is great news indeed. This phasing out is a great example of the #MovetheMoney initiative given the fact that the UK was the birthplace of coal-fired power generation.
It has now quit the dirtiest fossil fuel for good after switching off the Ratcliffe-on-Soar plant for the last time on September 30.
According to energy research group Ember, coal made up for slightly less than 1% of power generation till August 2024 while renewables, led by wind, accounted for 52% of the mix, and nuclear 17%.
This sums up to the fact that fossil fuels, mainly gas, made up less than a third (31%) of the total in the year to end-August.
If the UK can do it, so can the rest of the world. In various parts of the world, we still rely heavily on coal for various purposes but the United Kingdom has proven that phasing out fossil fuels is not impossible.
