Sweden's government withdraws support for the EU Nature Restoration Law

The failure of EU ministers to reach a consensus on a new Nature Restoration Law, with Sweden among the blocking countries, along with Hungary, Italy, Finland, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium, risks undermining climate action and tarnishing the EU's credibility both globally and with voters.

Despite the law being agreed upon in November and adopted by the EU parliament a few weeks ago, several governments have been unable to secure the necessary majority to finalise it. This impasse calls into question the EU decision-making process and jeopardises commitments made on the international stage, such as the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
Germany and other supportive nations urge the blocking countries to reconsider, emphasizing the importance of upholding environmental commitments. Concerns are raised about the impact on upcoming COP16 and the European elections, with fears that failure to act would signify a lack of commitment to climate and nature protection. Is it really how Sweden wants to be seen from the outside? Agreeing with Hungary on environmental policy? Shameful!

Opposing the law would mean condemning our future and fully ignoring all the good things that nature brings to our society.

Disappointed in Sweden withdrawing support for the Nature Restoration Law. Protecting biodiversity is crucial. EU countries need to work together, not block progress.
