The Court of Justice of the EU has declared illegal the derogations allowing the use of neonicotinoid pesticides

The Court of Justice of the European Union has declared illegal the derogations allowing the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in Europe.
The CJEU was seized by NGOs and a beekeeper about six derogations adopted by Belgium in 2018. Last Thursday, the Court ruled them illegal. Banned in the open field and for all crops since the end of 2018 in the European Union and since 2016 in France, neonicotinoids had since benefited from "exceptional" authorizations in eleven EU countries, in order to fight a disease touching sugar beets and limit the decrease in beet yields.

This ruling is seen as a victory for the protection of bees, which play a vital role in pollinating crops and maintaining biodiversity.
