Stockholm city names "climate general" to strengten collaboration and climate action

Annika Jacobson has been appointed as the new "klimatgeneral" or climate general for Stockholm, with the aim of contributing to concrete and clear results in the city's climate work. Her role will be to strengthen the central management and follow up on the city's climate efforts, as well as contribute to reducing emissions in sectors such as transportation, electricity and district heating, and waste management.

Stockholm has a goal to be climate positive by 2030, and the climate general appointment is seen as a powerful reinforcement towards achieving this goal. She will have close contact with the city's directors and politicians and will represent the city in external collaborations with the region, civil society, and business.
The role of the climate general is self-standing, giving her a significant mandate to make changes and collaborate with various stakeholders to achieve Stockholm's climate goals. In particular, Jacobson hopes to strengthen the city's central governance and contribute to reducing emissions in emission-heavy sectors.
This appointment is seen as a vital step in addressing the urgent issue of climate change and comes right after the release of the latest IPCC report but also coincides with the strong warning from the Swedish Climate Policy Council to the current national government that their current policy is leading us is the wrong direction. It's great to see that Stockholm's new leadership is trying to keep its position as a climate leader in the country.

Criticism of the government after the report: "Unforgivable in burning climate crisis" The government's climate policy is seen in a new report. Several organizations now agree with the harsh criticism. - We are heading in the wrong direction in Sweden, says David Mjureke, climate expert. - We are heading in the wrong direction in Sweden, says David Mjureke, climate expert at WWF. According to the Climate Policy Council's new report, the government's policy has led to Sweden losing momentum in climate work. Voices are now being raised from several organizations that demand greater responsibility from politics. - We are heading in the wrong direction in Sweden. Emissions will increase with the policy we have seen so far from the government and it is completely out of step with what science says is required, says David Mjureke at the WWF. He points out, like the Climate Policy Council, that everyone needs to pull in the same direction. This applies to all sectors within politics, but also in state, regional and municipal work. David Mjureke mentions wind power as an example. - Most parties, including the government, say they are in favor of a rapid expansion of wind power. But at the municipal level, most projects are stopped by municipal vetoes, so it's pretty clear that an improved planning process, combined with other measures, is needed to move us in the same direction. "Very rushed" From the Nature Conservation Association, the council's finding that the EU is managing to keep the direction of the climate work, but not Sweden, is taken seriously. - This means that the climate action plan that the government will present will be very important and needs to contain concrete measures on a broad spectrum, says Karin Lexén at the Nature Conservation Association. She also highlights that the milestone goal for 2030 is just as important to reach as the longer-term goal of net zero emissions by 2045 at the latest. - Firstly, all scientific reports point to the fact that we have to turn the emission curve now and that it is very urgent. Then everyone must contribute to it, it is not possible to point the finger at anyone else, but all countries and all consumers have a responsibility, says Karin Lexén. - Secondly, Sweden has had the opportunity in the past and can still demonstrate that it is possible to combine an aggressive climate policy with good economic development. -Thirdly, assuming this leadership creates competitive advantages for Sweden. "Totally unforgivable" The aid organization Oxfam emphasizes that Sweden has a great responsibility for an equal climate transition and highlights that the prime minister now "needs to put on the leadership shirt". "For the first time in 20 years, Swedish policy leads to increased emissions. It is completely unforgivable in the midst of a burning climate crisis. The government is letting down the Swedish people and the world, and is undermining trust in our democracy by pursuing a policy that does not achieve the goals," says Hanna Nelson, head of policy Oxfam Sweden in a press release. https://www.nyteknik.se/miljo/kritiken-mot-regeringen-efter-rapporten-oforlatligt-i-brinnande-klimatkris/2018464
