The Cabécar indigenous territories of Bajo Chirripó and Alto Laguna Guaymí of Sierpe de Osa, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, received more than 179 million colones, from climate actions for the removal of emissions in their forests in the retroactive period 2018-2024 , in which they participate voluntarily.
The Territorial Forest Environmental Plans (PAFT) are important for indigenous territories, as they promote the investment of direct resources in their territories, but in addition, these are a requirement to access climate finance resources through the Forest Emissions Reduction Contract (CREF), a financial mechanism of the MINAE-FONAFIFO carried out for the implementation of resources within the framework of the National REDD+ Strategy, which refers to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, due to deforestation and forest degradation.
As explained by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Franz Tattenbach, there are currently 8 PAFTs completed at the national level, these are: Ujarrás, Talamanca Cabécar, Kekoldi, Boruca, Malecu, Abrojo Montezuma, Alto Laguna and Bajo Chirripó, on the other hand, 2 of them are waiting to be validated in their communities, while 14 are in the process of construction and completion.
These tools were developed through the participatory process of information, pre-consultation and consultation, carried out under the indigenous worldview, the Costa Rican legal framework and ILO Convention 169, as well as safeguards and operational policies of the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program, respectively. In this way, joint work was proposed between indigenous peoples and the Ministry of Environment and Energy, in order to define actions in environmental and forestry matters within the indigenous territories.
