Biodiversity is a hot topic, as many species are close to becoming extinct. This is a problem for us and our planet, as ecosystems get out of balance without them.
The balance in a healthy ecosystem exists between various types of living and nonliving parts, such as plants, animals, and microorganisms. These parts have different functions and contribute to the ecosystem in different ways.
For example, soil is important for land-based ecosystems such as forests, agricultural fields, and grasslands, as it makes a huge biodiversity possible. Soil biodiversity contributes to our health and the health of our planet:
1. by supporting food production
2. regulating pests and pathogens
3. supporting animal life above the ground
4. improving water quality and availability
5. controlling invasive species
6. regulating climate
