We are writing to express our deep concern about the alarming situation of the Great Pacific garbage patch, and your failure to take sufficient action to address this critical issue. As an organization that has a global impact, we believe that the IOC should take a leading role in addressing the climate crisis and promoting sustainability.
The Great Pacific garbage patch, also known as the Pacific trash vortex, is a massive collection of marine debris that is located in the North Pacific Ocean. It is estimated to be twice the size of Texas and consists mainly of plastics and other non-biodegradable materials. The garbage patch is not only unsightly, but it poses a significant threat to the health of our marine ecosystem.
Plastics in the garbage patch can take hundreds of years to decompose, and as they break down into smaller pieces, they release harmful chemicals into the water that can be absorbed by marine life. This not only threatens the health of marine organisms but can also harm humans who consume seafood.
As an organization that represents the world's top athletes, the IOC has a responsibility to address this issue and take measures to protect our planet. We urge you to work with governments and other organizations to develop a comprehensive plan to clean up the Great Pacific garbage patch and prevent further pollution of our oceans.
The IOC can play a critical role in raising awareness about the issue of ocean pollution and promoting sustainable practices. This can include promoting the use of biodegradable materials, reducing waste at events, and partnering with organizations that are working to reduce marine debris.
We strongly urge the IOC to take immediate action on this issue and work towards a more sustainable future for our planet. Failure to address this crisis now will result in devastating consequences for the health of our planet and the future of our children.
This warning is also directed to other world bodies like the United Nations because under Thier stewardship, they've let this problem grow all while doing nothing about it.
