Skipping nature in the name of war

The European Commission has pushed back the tabling of its "Nature protection package", which included the proposal to slash the use and risk of chemical pesticides in half by 2030 and nature restoration targets which aim at halting biodiversity loss in Europe. According to some leaked drafts, the Commission was expected to set an EU-wide binding 50% pesticide reduction target by 2030, leaving member states free to set their national targets and the legal commitment to cover at least 10% of the European agricultural area with high-diversity landscape features. The reason behind this postponed action is the conflict in Ukraine But as everyone knows here. We don't have time to wait! Using the war as a reason for their failure on nature protection is absurd

This is an expression of a very ancient problem: opposition of human advancenents ("positive" eg tech, or "negative" eg war) versus "nature". 2 philosophies of "life" with opposed orientations and different definitions of "life". Another example: what is considered good for society /social/mental (eg acceleration, cities) is not good for physical health, and vice versa (eg rest & recovery, of bodies or environments is not good for business & economy. These are fundamental representations that keep being viewed as conflictual, and no logician or cognitivist seems to have noticed. But we pay the price for having forgotten the non-separability if humans and nature, abd that "Human Advancement" is a survival mechanism, and NOT the only instinct. Taking sides has not worked for 50 years to stop the spiralling; nature & body-brain are still loosing. Pushing one way or coming "back" the other has not worked for 2500 years. One governing the other hasn't worked for 5-8000 years. When will cultures be open to a different view of this, that respects both so they can work together ? "For all", "in harmony", "not breaking boundaries" etc are not much useful: they still use the same suppositions and philosophies. Understanding: Whence do these two cone from? might be more useful than fearing where they are taking the whole boat abd forever "trying to survive" the consequences. Stop trying, fighting, taking, and actually act to do what CAN be done, here now not urgency or emergency or importance vs "does not matter". Just see whence & wither, know what to do and just do it With this approach there would be no Ukraine war or pesticide blanketing.

This issue is not an easy task to tackle. The Ukraine and Russia make up about 30 % of the global wheat exports and due to the war these numbers are very likely to drop significantly. Most probably this will mean that poorer urban populations in Northern Africa and the Middle East will have difficulties putting food on the table. In the event of food shortage I definitely think the EU as one of the world’s larger exporter of cereals should use their agricultural land to produce as much food as possible. Sweden and many other countries in Europe already have a decent sustainable agriculture and hence I think we have a responsibility to help feed the world

War doesn't stop climate change. It should therefore not be used as an excuse!

It was very disappointing to read about this! War cannot be used as an excuse for everything. Also, many pesticides are fossil fuel derived ones, so getting rid of them would mean being less dependent on gas and oil.

We have already overstepped the final boundary, the future is now guaranteed to be very grim, war will pale into insignificance with what is to come. The powers to be will not fare any better. Sad times.
