Climate warning

Taylor Swift’s travel habit and her carbon footprint

A few astonishing data about her: “A 12-hour, 5,000-mile weekend flight from Tokyo to Las Vegas to watch a Super Bowl” “138 tons of CO2 emissions in just three months to visit her boyfriend, Travis Kelce” “#1 celebrity CO2 polluter in 2022” “1,100 times the amount of the average person’s carbon emissions” … And here 👇 you can see all Swift’s private jet usage:

Swift's publicist says that she does use carbon offsets to compensate her private jet travel. But can you really offset your climate impact by paying more money? She didn’t explain any detail, but I doubt it. Carbon offsets – including carbon captures such as tree-planting initiatives, since trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air – are purchased to compensate for greenhouse gas emissions. The problem with this is that they are temporary or volatile stores of CO2 and so run the realistic risk of releasing the carbon they store back into the atmosphere, thereby potentially amplifying the climate crisis. Another type of carbon offset is for individuals to invest in environmental projects that reduce carbon emissions elsewhere. However there is usually no clear calculation in terms of the fee offset the amount of carbon, and they often overestimate the carbon amount. As a celebrity or ultra-rich, sustainability should be easier for her. She can easily influence her fans or concerts, for example, by minimizing single-use plastics and having composting bins on site, or flying less! There is much more she can do except carbon offset her private jet.  "We can have a higher standard for Taylor Swift, whose tour made over a billion dollars."

Taylor has been moving around in her private jet leaving so much carbon footprint while also being at the forefront of climate change advocacy. It is the height of pretence and we should call her out !

Taylor Swift has worked hard and deserves the wealth she has earned but it should not give her the right to pollute the planet and have a huge carbon footprint when we are all paying the price.

@lucinda_ramsay Indeed !Our role in this world whether rich or poor is to have the most minimal carbon footprint to our name. A shame that Taylor print enlarges by the day.

@lucinda_ramsay Even when rich, one should consider the implications of such a status in the society. Its true that Taylor is free to enjoy her money but in a manner that does not affect the Larger society

As a high-profile public figure, she has a responsibility to lead by example and reduce her environmental impact. Swift should consider more sustainable travel options to minimize her carbon emissions.

True that! As a celebrity, with such a big fan following, she does hold the capability to influence her followers and fans towards greener initiatives and people will listen to her. If only she, or her team, gave it more thought. We need money to phase out and redirect, not compensate for the greater evil.
