EU approves German state aid to ArcelorMittal for decarbonisation

The European Commission has given the green light to a €1.3 billion German plan, partially funded through the Recovery and Resilience Facility, to help ArcelorMittal Bremen and ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt decarbonize their steel production processes. This move aligns with the EU Hydrogen Strategy, the European Green Deal, and the Green Deal Industrial Plan, while reducing reliance on Russian fossil fuels. The project aims to produce 3.8 million tonnes of green crude steel per year, ultimately avoiding the release of more than 70 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over 16 years. The Commission approved the measure under EU State aid rules, noting that it supports the development of economic activities with low greenhouse gas emissions and is proportionate to the effective financing needs.
This is a significant step towards achieving the EU's climate goals outlined in the European Green Deal and the EU Hydrogen Strategy. This initiative not only promotes the production of green steel but also demonstrates a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards more sustainable industrial practices. It is encouraging to see such investments being made to drive the green transition and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, contributing to a more environmentally friendly future.
