African development bank and the UK choose Kenya for climate mitigation loan

African Development Bank and the United Kingdom (UK) have chosen Kenya as the recipient of a Ksh 9.3 billion loan for climate mitigation. Announcing the allocation on January 19, Nnenna Nwabufo, African Development Bank Director General for East Africa, stated that the money was to be channeled to the government's last mile and power grid project. “Kenya is close to achieving universal electricity access with a high component of renewable energy. This represents a major milestone in both sustainable development and the mitigate against climate change,” Fwabo commented. The two organisations explained that the funds would enable the government to address existing gaps in energy transmission and achieve universal electricity access. It will further improve the quality of life of communities in Kenya through enhanced socioeconomic development. Kenya, as the first country in East Africa to benefit from the program since its inception in 2022, will be joining five other North and West African countries previously selected for the funding. https://www.kenyans.co.ke/news/96679-uk-african-development-bank-award-kenya-ksh-95b-climate-change-loan?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=AK

This is fantastic news for Kenya and a commendable initiative by the African Development Bank and the United Kingdom. The Ksh 9.3 billion loan for climate mitigation, specifically directed towards Kenya's last mile and power grid project, showcases a commitment to sustainable development and combating climate change. Kenya's progress towards achieving universal electricity access, particularly with a focus on renewable energy, is a significant milestone. The allocation of funds to address gaps in energy transmission aligns with the broader global imperative of transitioning towards clean and sustainable energy sources.

50% Confessional loan to a large scale government can be very helpful for leap flogging on the other side of the economic barrier. This is a good news.

Climate finance is one of the key factors that could exponentially turn climate menaces into a stop if well channeled to the right course.
