Greening the art industry

Personally, my favorite thing to do in DC is to go to the Smithsonian Museums. Especially the art ones. However, I never really thought of about the carbon footprint that paintings and their exhibitions have. It turns out that paintings and traveling art exhibitions represent a huge carbon footprint with the frequency at which paintings travel and the methods of shipping paintings across the globe to buyers or museums. This week I came across the Gallery Climate Coalition in a New York Times article (link below), and this shifted my perspective about how exhibitions and art collectors' mindsets can have a positive environmental impact. Being a sustainably minded art collector or museum curator means that you have the power to choose for an environmentally friendly shipping method (like ground or ship rather than air), and that your money can shape the way that art market interacts with its carbon footprint. Featured in the New York Times Article, the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) was created in response to develop a meaningful and industry-specific response to the growing climate crisis. Finding about the GCC has been my favorite thing about climate I've read this week. Art makes us see things with new eyes. And this is really needed when trying to spread and understand the climate crisis and what we need to do. Great work Gallery Climate Coalition.

Firstly, thank you to Ford Brodeur for sharing and for all those who have given us #ClimateLove💚 GCC is an international research charity raising funds from within the art market to support effective initiatives working on the front line of the climate crisis, and facilitating the decarbonisation of the visual art sector. We do this through providing free sector-specific decarbonisation and environmental sustainability guidance and resources, and lobbying for greater systemic change. For more practical guidance you can find our: Decarbonisation Action Plan (1), our landmark collaboration with Christie’s Artists for ClientEarth (2&3) and our recently launched Sustainable Shipping Campaign (4). GCC is also a proud member of Partners for Arts Climate Targets (5); an international coalition of organisations within the visual arts engaged in collaborative efforts to accelerate the sector’s broad adoption of collective climate action. Art has always played a vital role in times of social change and right now, change is needed more than ever. 1. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://galleryclimatecoalition.org/usr/library/documents/main/gcc_decarbonisation_action_plan_2021.pdf 2. https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2021/07/22/can-auctions-save-the-earth-christies-to-fundraise-for-environmental-charity-by-selling-works-by-cecily-brown-and-rashid-johnson 3. https://express.adobe.com/page/2P0FkvxgXj7gd/ 4. https://galleryclimatecoalition.org/ssc/ 5. https://www.visualartspact.org/#:~:text=Partners%20for%20Arts%20Climate%20Targets,adoption%20of%20collective%20climate%20action

Art is the reflection of the society... Art communicates more that what is displayed on the Converse... Art should be used to communicate the effects of climate change on the society
