While the world struggles to decarbonize, Sweden’s primary electricity generation is entirely fossil-free, relying mainly on hydro-, nuclear, biomass, and wind power. However, this doesn’t mean that we’re done. By 2045, our electricity demand will have doubled. In the same time span, 75% of the current electricity infrastructure will have reached its end of life. New, efficient, and fossil-free electricity solutions are needed.
Phoenix BioPower: Efficient, Plannable, Scalable
Phoenix BioPower is one such solution. Bioenergy is a technology that converts waste products from the forestry industry—pine cones, roots, small branches, etc.—into plannable electricity or fuel. This biomass, potentially providing thousands of TWh per year, is not used today or is used in inefficient processes that waste most of its energy potential. This biomass must be used to its highest potential to provide our societies with renewable energy and phase out fossil fuels.
Phoenix BioPower addresses this through a solution that gasifies the biomass, producing almost three times as much electricity from a given district heating grid. This efficiency can be maintained in plants as small as 10 MWe, which means the solution is suitable for smaller, local applications, and is scalable up to 100 MWe or more. In addition to energy, the gasified biomass can be reformed into industrial gases such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
All plants also produce residue heat which can heat buildings through district heating, or the heat can be used to remove carbon from the atmosphere through Bio-Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS).
