Last week was the inauguration of the Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games! The Santiago 2023 Games are meant to become the first carbon-neutral mega-sporting event in Chile, setting a high standard for upcoming sporting events. And during this first week, Fiu, the adorable mascot of Santiago 2023 took the world by storm.
Fiu's origin story is unique, born in a local wetland, this adorable character is on a mission to instil a love for nature and sustainability and raise awareness about wetlands and the other species living in this threatened environment.
Fiu is passionate about preserving and valuing the environment and believes in the power of small actions to make a big difference. This charismatic mascot embodies the values of the Games, which are set to become the first carbon-neutral mega-sporting event in Chile and resonates with the Games' Legacy and Sustainability Strategy. The Santiago 2023 Legacy and Sustainability Strategy consists of two pillars: sustainable mega-sporting events and performance reporting. It encompasses six key areas, with over 20 initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, making a positive impact on the local community and the environment. The strategy aims to coordinate and enhance activities related to environmental protection and education and marks a commitment to hosting the event with high sustainability standards.
Chile's Environment Minister Maisa Rojas stated, "The Pan American and Parapan American Games present a valuable opportunity to host an environmentally friendly international event. This collaboration reinforces our commitment to achieving high sustainability standards."
In September, it was announced that the 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games will be the first carbon-neutral mega-sporting event in Chile. The environmental management includes 100% waste management at all venues, with targets of 80% recycling during the Games and 85% total brand image recycling. Efforts in water and energy efficiency include 40% water savings in equestrian tracks and the use of 100% certified renewable energy from the electrical grid. Clean transportation initiatives include electric logistics vehicles and the construction of 40 inclusive bus stops. In terms of the circular economy, partnerships with sponsors like Virutex and Cachantún involve recycling soft plastics in exchange for cleaning supplies.
An impressive commitment by the government and the organisers of this event!
