Amazon forest felled to build road for climate summit

Sad as a four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém. The aim of building this road is stayed as to ease traffic to the city, which will host more than 50,000 people - including world leaders - at the conference in November. Although the state government touts the highway's "sustainable" credentials, some locals and conservationists are outraged at the environmental impact. The Amazon plays a vital role in absorbing carbon for the world and providing biodiversity, and many say this deforestation contradicts the very purpose of a climate summit.

It is obvious hypocrisy to build a highway through the Amazon for COP30. Its aim is compromised when a crucial rainforest is destroyed in order to accommodate a climate summit. Sustainability is preserving the environment rather than paving it over for convenience.

How is this even happening months to the COP ? Countries hosting this event are always doing preposterous things months to the event

The thought that climate summit is in Brazil, they should stick to show the reason why by saving our environment/forest (Amazon), irony, 🤔

@sally_wangari it's ironic that they are destroying what should be protected to create way for a climate summit

In as much as we are building infrastructure, the environment should not be compromised. We can figure out some innovations for the new infrastructure but leave the environment as it is.

@millicent_olale As far as I am aware, we can make wood and palm oil in a lab alongside others products. The problem is, as like other solutions to climate change (at least in my view) aren't implemented fast enough. So we need to figure out how we get them off the ground to make progress aside from what has been done already.
