The power of behavior change to save money and energy

Our family of 4 saved over 3.000 euro on gas and electricity in 2023 compared to the average in The Netherlands. Without solar panels, just with behavior change!
This is how we did it, and how you can do it too: We took a critical look at what we consider "normal" in terms of our energy consumption.
3 years ago we started looking critically at our behavior. Because we often see energy as fixed costs, but how fixed are they really? Could we not save both energy and money here?
Based on this, we found a huge top 2 of the largest costs per year:
1. Shower and (hot) water use
2. Heating
Could we behave differently on these fronts? Yes we could! We adapted our behavior step by step to find that new "normal".
We then gradually adjusted over a period of 3 years.
Huge cost savers for us were:
1. 🚿🚿🚿🚿🚿🚿🚿 Shower 7x per week
-->🚿🚿🚿🚿 Shower 3-4 times per week
-->🚿🚿 Shower 2x per week and use a washing cloth on the other days.

2. In winter, we heated our house up to 20 degrees Celsius 👙
--> Then 19 👕
--> Then 18 🧥
--> To now 17 🧣
Our body quickly got used to the lower temperature and we easily keep ourselves warm! By moving, or with a blanket on the couch, it's nice, warm and quite cozy!
First responses we often get are: What a hassle, I can not do without my daily shower! I would not be able to cope with the cold. All understandable, as that was my "normal" too.
But when I then translate this into the amount of money we saved compared to an average family in The Netherlands, I suddenly have their interest: We saved over 3.000 euros on gas and electricity!
You can use this to go on holiday twice (in your own country :) ), to further insulate your house or to save for yourself or the kids!
Can we find ways to encourage families across Western countries (who use WAY more energy per person than in the rest of the world) to change their behavior, with examples like these:
- In the app or website, show use cases from within your country with similar family size: What are they using/paying, and offer interviews and use cases on how these households got there?
- Show energy usage in various countries, so people see the difference between a Dutch or Danish family and an Indian family.
For the record, our energy usage with 2 adults and 2 kids of 5 and 8:
Electricity: 1503 kWh, Gas: 189 m3
Let me know what you think, where you are in terms of energy usage and how you got there!

    What an inspiring story of how behavior change can lead to significant savings in both money and energy! 💰💡 Adjusting shower frequency and lowering heating temperatures made a huge difference for this family, proving that small changes can have a big impact.

      Wow. This is a brilliant move. I am definitely going to try this new trick. My actions must count

        @rukia_ahmed_abdi yes it should be a way to open the eyes of many people in countries that think they are doing great, but are major consumers of both energy and resources like The Netherlands and Denmark.

        I think this is a great way to reduce consumption and to keep our consumption levels down. Now imagine this coupled with renewable energy, that surely makes a huge difference in the planet when adopted by many people.

          @munene_mugambi Thank you, new technologies and behavior change will have to go hand in hand to come out of the mess we created mainly in Western Europe and North America. I am sure if we still compare my energy usage to many other countries, I would still be a big energy user. Lot's to learn and change!
