Swedish startup company Zparq is in full swing electrifying the private boat market with its smart and modular outboards.
Zparq has, with decades of KTH expertise, managed to develop a modular and lightweight alternative to gasoline-gurgling two-stroke engines. The first iteration is 10 KW (equivalent to 15 horsepower) and weighs 17 kilograms instead of 60, which is not unusual for outboards.

"It has been important for us to build a system that allows you to take the engine home when you are done for the day. It also includes two battery packs so that you can charge at home overnight. You don't need a charging infrastructure at the dock," says Jonas Genchel.

Collects 150 data points

The unique thing about Zparq's solution is primarily the cooling technology. The water circulates through the engine and cools it down, which makes the smaller size possible. Patents exist for the cooling technology, parts of the battery pack and the drive electronics.

But a modern engine is of course also packed with antennas and sensors.

"We measure 150 data points that are sent to the cloud and analyzed. Then they can be presented in an app. With AI, we can build more predictive models in the future."
