🌏THE TRUE COSTS OF CO₂ 🫣
#COP27 is on! Time to have a look at the hidden costs of GHG emissions.
🌱Why does it matter?
Carbon pricing has emerged as a key policy mechanism to mitigate the dangerous impacts of GHG pollution and drive investments towards cleaner, climate compatible alternatives.
Therefore many companies use an internal carbon system to address the risk of increasing carbon prices and to limit their negative impact on the climate. However, critics say the tool is often used insufficient.
🫣 Why?
TOO LOW #ASSUMPTIONS
CDP shows that from 5,900 companies reporting in 2020 most companies using an internal carbon price work with 25$ per CO₂e ton. The UN suggests however to use at least 100$, while according to the German Federal Environment Agency, the true costs of GHG emissions are over 180€ per ton!
REDUCING THE TRUE #COSTS
🌍 Implementing an internal carbon price into corporate strategy and the decision-making process is not the end goal for a business - it is critical to evaluate its ultimate climate performance. Best practices for reducing CO₂e is to set up a #valuechain approach that covers all significant sources of emissions.
