UK takes a step forward in climate action with the launch of this urban wetlands initiative

After years of advocacy from organisations such as the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, the UK Government is implementing legislation to require new developments in England to include mini wetlands such as rain gardens and ponds to prevent flooding and increase urban biodiversity.

SuDS, or sustainable drainage systems, will capture and slow rainwater and have the potential to reduce flood damages by £3bn and provide a natural resource for people's mental well-being. SuDS can also improve water quality, create habitats for wildlife and remove pressure from the sewer system. This decision comes after a decade of advocacy by WWT and others wildlife and environment organisations.
WWT will work closely with the government to ensure high-quality SuDS standards and community involvement. The implementation of SuDS is a positive step in the fight against climate change, and biodiversity decline, and supports WWT's goal to create and restore 100,000 hectares of wetlands across the UK.
