Green Climate Fund Pioneers Swift Climate-Health Initiative in Cook Islands

The Cook Islands' inaugural single-country project, swiftly approved by the GCF Board and receiving funding within a record 20 days, highlights a significant stride in bolstering health outcomes for its populace. With USD 12.5 million from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) out of a total project cost of USD 13.4 million, this initiative aims to fortify the Cook Islands' health infrastructure against the mounting threats posed by climate change-induced health challenges.
Addressing a trio of health concerns—communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, and health impacts exacerbated by climate change—the project targets elevated rates of malnutrition, illness, and mortality prevalent in the Cook Islands. Moreover, climate-related disasters exacerbate these challenges, disproportionately affecting vulnerable demographics and disrupting healthcare services nationwide.
Named "Akamatutu’anga To Tatou Ora’anga Meitaki (ATOM): Building a healthy and resilient Cook Islands community – one block at a time," the initiative prioritizes approximately 30 communities and 22 health facilities across 12 inhabited islands, including remote outer islands where healthcare accessibility is limited.
The project's rapid implementation underscores GCF's dedication to expedite climate action, setting new benchmarks for efficiency. Notably, this initiative represents a series of firsts: the Pacific's inaugural project focusing solely on climate and health, as well as the Cook Islands' first single-country project administered by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Management. This achievement epitomizes a collaborative, country-driven approach, leveraging GCF's comprehensive support framework to realize impactful climate resilience initiatives.
