Oil exploration activities have long been linked to the exacerbation of climate crises, and the impact is felt most acutely in vulnerable communities. These communities, already battling chronic flooding, continue to face relentless hardship as the world moves on. Over 800 deaths and the displacement of 3 million people serve as stark reminders of the urgent need for targeted climate action and support. The struggle to rebuild and recover is ongoing, and more must be done to channel loss and damage finance to those who need it most. We don’t have time to delay.
The Heartbeat Flood Impact Assessment Project, spearheaded by Lincgreen Prospects, aimed to create a comprehensive needs assessment documentary to pinpoint critical issues in Isoko North and Isoko South Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Delta State, Nigeria, in anticipation of the upcoming flood season predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET). The project assessed preparedness and vulnerabilities in farmlands and fishponds, conducted interviews with locals to understand their preparatory activities, and established frameworks to minimize loss and damage from anticipated floods. The outcomes focused on enhancing community resilience and economic empowerment, providing a detailed understanding of flooding trends, their links to climate crises, and the resultant community losses. The project also identified the floods' impact on local livelihoods, developed strategies to foster flood-resilient communities, and engaged with stakeholders to provide mentorship and sustainable practice guidelines. A documentary video highlighted the pre-flood, flood, and post-flood crises faced by people in the communities of Irri, Idheze, Oyede, Okpe, Orie, Utue-Irri, and Aviara in Isoko North and Isoko South LGAs, underscoring the importance of targeted intervention and comprehensive support to vulnerable communities facing climate crises. By focusing on resilience and preparedness, we can help these communities navigate their challenges and build a sustainable future. #ClimateActionNow #LINCgreenProspects #WeDontHaveTime
