BARCLAYS BANK IS EUROPE’S BIGGEST FOSSIL FUEL FINANCIER

According to recent research, the world's major banks have provided almost $7tn in funding to the fossil fuel industry since the Paris agreement to limit carbon emissions was signed in 2016. The agreement aimed to limit global heating to no more than 2C above preindustrial levels, with an ideal limit of 1.5C to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. While many countries have promised to reduce carbon emissions, private interests have continued to provide funding to oil, gas, and coal companies, allowing them to expand their operations. London-based Barclays was identified as Europe's largest fossil fuel financier, providing $24.2bn in funding.
Tom BK Goldtooth, the executive director of the Indigenous Environmental Network, which co-authored the study, said: “Financiers and investors of fossil fuels continue to light the flame of the climate crisis. Paired with generations of colonialism, the fossil fuel industry and banking institutions’ investment in false solutions create unlivable conditions for all living relatives and humanity on Mother Earth.

Barclays investing in fossil fuels isn't just environmental – it affects communities and indigenous peoples too. It's important for them to consider the broader consequences of their funding decisions.

They should be called out for continuing to finance fossil fuel despite the extreme emissions it causes.

Their actions are not just irresponsible, ..they're downright destructive. It's time for Barclays to wake up and smell the carbon emissions before it's too late.

This is a negative statics for Barclays bank that they must purpose to turn around. Financial institutions have a great role to play in climate action and must consider taking it positively and seriously.
