Workers Prepare To Say Goodbye At UK's Last Coal-Fired Plant

Jon Newcombe joined Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station as an apprentice 42 years ago.
His son, Aran Newcombe, followed in his father's footsteps and joined the plant in 2007 as an apprentice.
Aran met his wife working there and says he has got a lot to thank the plant for.
The power station has been generating electricity for 57 years.
It was commissioned by the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1967, with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts, enough to power two million homes.

You have to give it up for the UK for this move, it is about time all of Europe phased out coal instead of the games we see going on in Germany of switching off Nuclear Power Plants and instead choosing to reintegrate coal into their grid.

@annett_michuki And it is about time they did it, I mean they may be behind the previously agreed upon schedule but they're certainly ahead of many other countries that have chosen not to power down their coal plants.

@elizbeth_gathigia I'd like to see where they plan to get the energy to fill the void left by this and other coal plants they they've shut down. Hopefully, it's not imported gas and fossil fuels because that would be laughable

This marks a significant milestone in the UK's energy transition away from fossil fuels. Phasing out coal-fired power generation is a vital step in the country's efforts to decarbonize its electricity system and meet its climate change commitments. This closure represents tangible progress in the UK's shift towards renewable and low-carbon energy sources.

The dedication and hard work of the workers at the plant are commendable, and their contributions to the nation's energy landscape will be remembered.

I hope that the closure will at least lead to a productive transition that supports the workers affected while moving towards a more sustainable future.
