Revolutionizing Lithium Production on a String

Researchers at Princeton University have developed a novel method for efficiently extracting lithium from briny water, a process critical for battery production. The technique uses porous fibers twisted into strings, which have a water-attracting core and a water-repelling surface. When immersed in a saltwater solution, water is drawn up the strings through capillary action, similar to how trees transport water from roots to leaves. The water evaporates from the string's surface, leaving behind concentrated salt ions, including lithium. The method accelerates the evaporation process, potentially yielding initial lithium harvests in less than one month and reducing land requirements by more than 90% compared to traditional operations. It could also make it feasible to extract lithium from smaller or more diluted sources and more humid climates, as well as seawater.
