Masdar and Boeing Collaborate to Advance the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Sector in the UAE and Worldwide.

Masdar, a global leader in renewable energy and green hydrogen, is partnering with Boeing, a prominent aerospace company, to advance the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and worldwide. This collaboration aligns with the commercial aviation industry's ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The Memorandum of Understanding was inked by Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Chief Green Hydrogen Officer at Masdar, and Kuljit Ghata-Aura, President of Middle East, Turkey & Africa at Boeing, during the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) 2023.
In this joint effort, Masdar and Boeing will actively promote the development and implementation of SAF policies not only in the UAE but also on a global scale. They will explore innovative SAF accounting principles that could help overcome geographical limitations as the SAF industry expands.
SAF, derived from sustainable sources like green hydrogen, has the potential to reduce carbon emissions over its lifecycle by up to 85% when compared to traditional petroleum jet fuel. It is widely accepted as a drop-in replacement for up to 50% of conventional jet fuel in existing aircraft and offers significant carbon emission reduction potential across all aviation sectors over the next three decades.
Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Chief Green Hydrogen Officer at Masdar, expressed, "Global net-zero goals can only be achieved through international collaboration and innovation. As the UAE's clean energy leader, Masdar is proud to partner with Boeing, a renowned global aerospace company, to foster the growth of sustainable aviation fuel projects. Together, we will advocate for enabling policies to nurture this vital market. As we approach the UAE hosting COP28, we will continue to leverage our combined knowledge, expertise, and dedication to support the industry and create a more sustainable future for all."
Kuljit Ghata-Aura, President of Boeing Middle East, Turkiye, and Africa, added, "We are excited to collaborate with Masdar to drive the expansion of the sustainable aviation fuel industry, both locally and globally. This effort will facilitate job creation, economic growth, and significant business opportunities. Adopting SAF represents aviation's most potent means of decarbonization. Our more than a decade of partnership with the UAE in sustainable aviation underscores our shared commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050."
Earlier this year, during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Masdar announced that its green hydrogen-focused initiative for SAF production is actively collaborating with licensors to certify a novel SAF production method from methanol.
