Advancing Tangible Steps for Water Security in Africa Ahead of Water Investment Action Plan Development

African Union Member States, international development partners, and civil society have joined forces to draft the Africa Water Investment Action Plan, a strategic initiative designed to expedite the United Nations' 2023 Water Action Agenda's implementation across the African continent. This ambitious plan has a core objective: securing an additional $30 billion in annual financing by 2030, focusing primarily on water security and sustainable sanitation.
Currently in the developmental phase, this action plan will provide a structured roadmap for African nations. It closely aligns with the recommendations set forth by the International High-Level Panel on Water Investments, as showcased in the pivotal report "Africa's Rising Investment Tide," unveiled at the UN 2023 Water Conference.
The genesis of this endeavor lies in a global consultation hosted by the African Union Commission (AUC) in partnership with the High-Level Panel during the Stockholm World Water Week 2023, held on August 21, 2023. Here, stakeholders, experts, and leaders gathered to contribute their insights.
The culmination of these collaborative efforts will take place during the launch of the High-Level Panel Campaign, "Mind the Gap – Invest in Water," slated for September 19, 2023, at the UN General Assembly - SDG Summit in New York. This campaign will be led by prominent figures such as H.E. Macky Sall, H.E. Mark Rutte, and H.E. Hage Geingob.
The plan underscores the importance of domestic financing while also urging African governments to significantly increase their allocations for water infrastructure. It calls for a radical improvement in delivery, aligning supply with demand and adopting future-focused programming.
Furthermore, the plan highlights the necessity of robust and mutually beneficial partnerships between governments and non-governmental entities, particularly in involving the private sector. Such collaborations are seen as essential to attract additional investments into the water sector.
In summary, the Africa Water Investment Action Plan signifies a significant stride toward addressing water-related challenges across the continent. It seeks not only to secure essential funding but also promotes collaboration, innovation, and transformative actions to ensure water security and sustainable sanitation throughout Africa.
