Climate warning

Indian farmers burn crop waste despite ongoing toxic smog.

Fewer farmers have invested in equipment to manage their crop waste instead of burning it. However, with sowing season approaching, many faces pressure to dispose of the paddy stubble quickly thus going for burning method. Crop residue fires, which are illegal, contribute significantly to the toxic smog affecting northern India and Pakistan, worsening air quality. Recently, Delhi's air quality index reached a severe level of 494, prompting restrictions on activities and online schooling. Punjab recorded over 1,200 fires in a single day, highlighting the ongoing public health crisis.

Addressing crop residue burning is essential for improving air quality and public health in the region. Sustainable waste management practices must be promoted to support farmers like Singh, who are trying to make environmentally responsible choices while facing pressing agricultural deadlines.

It is concerning that despite the severe air quality crisis, many farmers still resort to burning crop waste due to lack of viable alternatives and support. Immediate intervention is needed asap!

Burning vegetation brings about air pollution that could bring about health problems to the individuals living there.

Crop burning is a serious issue, but the root problem is the lack of resources for farmers
