Researchers at Linköping University in Sweden have developed a revolutionary zinc and lignin-based battery, capable of over 8000 recharge cycles. This affordable and sustainable battery aims to provide a reliable energy storage solution for low-income countries with limited access to electricity. This innovation could significantly impact households and businesses that rely on solar power but lack efficient storage options.
Led by Professor Reverant Crispin of Linköping University the team’s battery matches the energy density of lead-acid batteries without toxic lead, maintaining about 80% capacity after extensive use and holding a charge for up to a week. The use of potassium acrylate-based salt (WiPSE) in the electrolyte solution has addressed the common issue of zinc reacting with water, ensuring high stability and longevity.
Zinc and lignin are abundant, inexpensive, and easy to recycle, making this battery a sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries, which pose environmental and human rights challenges. The researchers see a potential for scaling up production to larger batteries, which could be cost-effective for widespread use.
