Over 650 academics have rallied behind a campaign urging British universities to embrace 100% plant-based catering as part of their commitment to fight the climate crisis. Spearheaded by the student-led organisation Plant-Based Universities, this movement draws parallels to the fossil fuel divestment efforts already adopted by 101 UK universities. Why? Because it recognises that one of the most potent ways to address the climate crisis is by reducing meat consumption.
The call for plant-based meals isn't just about dietary choices. It's about institutional change. The open letter, sent to university leaders, highlights the role of universities in driving intellectual, moral, and scientific progress. It's a call for these institutions to live up to their climate emergency declarations.
The support for this campaign extends far and wide, with prominent professors such as Frank Kelly, Simon Lewis, and Chris Rapley, as well as broadcaster and campaigner Chris Packham and Green Party MP Caroline Lucas, lending their voices. This campaign is an example of the growing recognition that our dietary choices are deeply linked to the planet's health.
