With new electric cars, the demand for lithium is also growing. A new plant of the Canadian company Li-Cycle in Saxony-Anhalt is to extract the valuable raw material from old batteries. The Canadian recycling company has already convinced well-known investors. The Canadian company Li-Cycle puts one of the largest recycling plants for lithium-ion batteries into operation in Europe. In the first expansion stage, 10,000 tons of old batteries are to be processed in the factory in Sülzetal near Magdeburg, as the company announced to the Handelsblatt on Tuesday. By the end of the year, Li-Cycle wants to double the capacity, from 2024 up to 30,000 tons should be able to be processed. The Canadian company, in which the Swiss raw materials giant Glencore and the battery cell manufacturer LG have invested, is much earlier than many well-known competitors. A factory with a capacity of 10,000 tons of battery scrap per year has so far only been put into operation in Germany by the Mercedes-Benz-supported company Primobius in Hilchenbach, North Rhine-Westphalia. BASF plans to open a recycling plant in Schwarzheid, Brandenburg, in 2024. https://app.handelsblatt.com/unternehmen/industrie/lithium-neue-recyclingfabrik-soll-bis-zu-30-000-tonnen-batterien-wiederverwerten/29289940.html
