Pixel Planet Today's post

Global temperatures may be rising, but even more heat has been absorbed by our oceans. Dark blue oceans absorb immense amounts of heat which normally disperses with currents and into the depths. However, thanks to extreme heat and lack of wind and rain (climate change, perhaps?!), ocean temperatures rose to a staggering 101 degrees Fahrenheit in Florida's Manatee Bay this week! Ocean surface temperatures that high haven't been recorded anywhere else in the world. . The temperature is astounding, but it might not (technically) be a world record. The previous hottest ocean temperature was recorded in Kuwait Bay, but because Manatee Bay is shallower and has more sediment (making it even easier to absorb heat), it's unclear if it will become an official record. . But even if it doesn't get the crown - we shouldn't have to tell you that temperatures like that are WAY TOO HIGH. High temperatures over the past several weeks have been brutal for area reefs, with one going from completely healthy to bleached within 2 weeks (80% of which is estimated to be dead)! Reefs sitting in deeper water offer a glimmer of hope, but ecologists are incredibly worried for those in warmer waters. . . Read more about the insane temperatures:

... Or read more about why it might not be a record:

. Graphic shows a coral reef with bleached coral. The factoid reads: "The ocean surface temperature in Florida's Manatee Bay was recorded at over 101 degrees Fahrenheit this week." .
