RAILROAD REFLECTIONS A few days ago me and my family got back from a two week train trip in Europe. It was such a great experience, and I would therefore like to share with you my very personal top 3-list of the major benefits of traveling by railroad instead of flying: 🚆 The great feeling of falling asleep in a city like Hamburg and waking up the next morning in the Austrian Alps. 🚆 The even better feeling of always arriving in the middle of town, of grabbing your backpack, leaving the train, stepping out of the station and just suddenly being right there, in the centre of things. No security check, no waiting for luggade, no airport shuttle, no hassle. Just simplicity. 🚆 The never-ending opportunities to combine a few days visit in a super cool city like Berlin, with a period of complete relaxation and/or beach life in one of the stunningly picturesque towns surrounding Lake Garda in Northern Italy – and then choose to board another train to spend a few days in the great mountains of Austria. It was also great to experience first-hand how Germany had chosen to tackle higher prices on fossil energy, by giving everyone the opportunity to travel by bus or train for only 9 euros for a whole month in June, July and August. What a great way to encourage a more sustainable way of travel! My family alone saved almost 1,5 ton of CO2 by travelling the way we did (compared to flying). Just imagine the combined climate benefit of Germany’s decision.
