Post 904: World Wetlands Day. Expanding cities doesn't have to mean tearing down natural spaces - in fact, cities can see huge benefits by preserving and restoring natural spaces.
.
Fact: New York City saves between $3 and $8 billion in water treatment by preserving wetlands further upstate. Wetlands work incredibly well in filtering heavy metals, pollutants, and bacteria from water, so by protecting wetlands near upstate reservoirs, the city can spend less on wastewater treatment and invest in natural spaces at the same time. And at a price tag of just $1.5 billion, it's a no brainer!
