The housing company Strängnäs Bostads in Strängnäs, Sweden, is promoting sustainable travel among its employees in a very encouraging way. From the 1st of January next year, employees who choose to travel by train instead of by plane for their long-distance holiday will be rewarded with en extra day of payed vacation. ”The reactions have been very positive. Our employees have started thinking about taking the train to the Alpes rather than travel by air, and it has also sparked interesting discussions concerning the future of travel”, says Elin Rengman, initiator of the initiative, in an interview with the newspaper Aktuell Hållbarhet (Sustainability Today). The compensation covers journeys of more than 750 kilometers, one way. For shorter distances than that, train should be the obvious alternative, according to Strängnäs Bostads.
