Worst-ever contamination of Ireland’s largest lake: What’s to blame?

Belfast, Northern Ireland – An algal bloom resurgence at Lough Neagh, the biggest freshwater body in the United Kingdom and Ireland, has renewed public debate about its ownership and management. For months, extensive blue-green algal (cyanobacteria) growths have led to animal deaths, human sickness, temporary beach closures, and the permanent closure of businesses along the lake and connecting waterways. Regional agencies say the summer’s bloom reached “levels not seen since the 1970s”, while lough residents say they were the “worst” they have ever seen. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/6/why-is-lough-neagh-the-uks-largest-freshwater-lake-turning-green

Its disheartening to realize that there are authorities who can protect this lake but they are not willing to.

@george_kariuki its sad to see other regions are suffering from water scarcity while others are not appreciating and caring what God gave them for free

All stakeholders should be ashamed of themselves for not taking care the natural resource. Action is all that is needed not pointing fingers.

The blame falls on all departments mandated to take care of such natural resources. Where were they?
