"Save the bees" is one of the most common slogans used by nature-lovers - but the bees that need the most attention may not be the ones that first come to mind.
.
European honey bees, the poster-child of insect conservation, face many threats thanks to modern agriculture practices - but in many ways, are much better cared for than native North American bees. Since 2006, when dramatic population declines were recorded in bee colonies, the agriculture industry was forced to spring into action to save its pollinators. The multi-billion dollar industry is able to put a lot of resources towards treating sick colonies and prevent large-scale collapse, but those benefits don't always equate to protecting native counterparts (such as disease and parasitic mites).
.
The issues facing native bees are only exacerbated by a lack of monitoring. Honey bee populations are closely watched, but the 4,000-some different species of native North American bees (none of which, by the way, produce what we know as honey) have populations that can only be estimated. Few species are adequately studied, and while we know that populations of insects across the board have been decimated by centuries of detrimental agricultural practices, incomplete data may not give enough data to save those that need our attention the most.
