Swedish government ends all financing of development research

Halfway into the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals agenda the Swedish government has announced its decision to cease funding for development research through the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). The decision, effective immediately but not retroactively, is very concerning when it comes to the future of research dedicated to sustainable development and poverty alleviation in low-income countries.

The impact of this decision is far-reaching. It means that no new grants for development research will be awarded in 2023, and the ongoing evaluation process for this year's applications will be halted. That includes research related to the SDGs, including critical issues such as combating climate change and preventing armed conflict. Researchers who have ongoing projects in the field of development research will not be affected and can continue their work until the end of their funding period.

The objective of the research grants in development research has been to strengthen Swedish research of the highest quality with specific relevance to poverty reduction and sustainable development in low-income countries. By addressing these pressing global challenges, the research has played a crucial role in advancing progress towards the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
Since 2013, the Swedish Research Council has provided targeted funding for development research, using resources from the government's aid budget. The decision to end this funding stream is scary and another blow to the research world. Such research is crucial in addressing the complex challenges faced by low-income countries and finding innovative solutions to achieve long-term sustainability.

Does the Swedish government know that ignoring the problem and stopping funding research, won't make the problem disappear???? This is such a bad decision for the independence of research.......
