Climate warning

Climate change in Japan and its impacts.

Globally,Japan is among the top ten countries that contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere as it is a highly industrialised country, affecting climate change negatively. From the synthesis report on observations, projections and impact assessments of climate change, some of the observation data and future projections of climate change were made as follows; 1)The temperature over Japan is rising faster than the global average-Annual mean surface temperature over Japan as with global annual mean has increased with some fluctuations at a rate of 1.19°C/100 years.Projections with the four RCP scenarios indicate that annual mean temperature at the end of 21st century will rise throughout Japan. 2)The number of days with a maximum temperature of 30°C/35°C or above is increasing-Annual number of days with maximum temperatures of 30°C or above known as "manatsu-bi" in Japanese and 35°C or above known as "mosho-bi" in Japanese has increased from the period of 1931 to 2016. 3)While heavy rainfall events are increasing, the number of days with precipitation is decreasing-The number of days with heavy rains(100mm/day)has increased.Additionally, the number of occurences of events with extreme precipitation,50mm/hour according to Automated Meteorological Data Acquisition System(AMeDAS)is also increasing. 4)While snow depth decreases in many areas, heavy snowfall may increase in inland areas-Annual maximum snow depth has decreased for the period between 1962 and 2016 on the sea of Japan side of eastern Japan and on the sea of Japan side of Western Japan at rates of 12.3% and 14.6% per decade respectively. On the other hand, heavy snow fall occuring at a frequency of every ten years is projected to occur more frequently in the inland areas of Honshu island and Hokkaido island.
