NGOs ActionAid, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Power Shift Africa, Re-Course, Urgewald, and 350 . org have joined forces to urge action to #FixTheFinance. As the climate crisis escalates, it’s become clear that addressing the financial flows driving environmental degradation is crucial.
Money makes the world go round but right now it makes it spin into climate chaos. More funds are funnelled into industries exacerbating the climate crisis than into solutions. This imbalance shows the urgent need to redirect financial resources towards sustainable initiatives and climate solutions.
Today is the start of the global #FixTheFinance week of mobilisations, set for April 16-19, 2024! It aims to hold governments, financial institutions, and international bodies accountable for their role in perpetuating harmful financial flows. This week of action seeks to spotlight how money connects various actors and impacts, from corporations to communities, crises to solutions.
Participants will organise stunts, strikes, workshops, and demonstrations to demand systemic change. They will amplify their message through social media, urging governments and financial institutions to prioritise funding for community-led climate solutions rather than destructive industries. Join the Digital Day of Action on April 18.
Each NGO has also published a one-page explainer briefing urging action to #FixTheFinance. They show that despite commitments to combat climate change, banks and multilateral institutions continue to invest in these industries, exacerbating environmental degradation and displacing communities. Meanwhile, governments often subsidise these ventures with public funds instead.
On top of that, vulnerable countries are burdened with debt from climate-related disasters exacerbated by the very financial institutions that should be aiding them. Wealthy nations, too, have pulled out from promises of climate finance, leaving frontline communities without the resources they need to adapt and transition to greener pathways.
The #FixTheFinance movement calls for a paradigm shift in global finance.
The climate crisis is not just an environmental issue, it's fundamentally about how money is invested and allocated.
You know, the (fossil-free) drill, let's #movethemoney. 💸
