Nestlé Enhances Water Management in Agriculture to Address Global Water Challenges

Nestlé is committed to advancing efficient water management in agriculture, particularly in regions facing significant water stress. As agriculture accounts for 70% of global water withdrawals, Nestlé recognizes the crucial need to address both the quantity and quality of water used in food production. To uphold this commitment, Nestlé requires its direct suppliers to meet the Responsible Sourcing Core Requirements, which include stringent legal and environmental standards related to water. The company conducts annual assessments of water risks at key sourcing locations for agricultural commodities such as cereals, coffee, dairy, and sugar, using a comprehensive water stress index.
Nestlé employs advanced tools to anticipate future water trends and risks, including the World Resources Institute’s Aqueduct and the Water Footprint Network methodology. These tools help estimate the water footprint of key agricultural commodities and identify potential risks. By benchmarking these assessments, Nestlé can prioritize actions within its supply chains to address water-related challenges effectively. The company is also undertaking an in-depth study to assess the water co-benefits of its agriculture and nature-based solution projects, which are integral to its Net Zero Roadmap and commitment to sustainable environmental practices.
The company's approach to water management is highly targeted and tailored to address specific local needs. In Herrera del Duque, Spain, Nestlé’s project involved planting trees and implementing advanced irrigation systems to combat biodiversity loss and reduce water evaporation in a local stream. This initiative not only enhanced biodiversity but also protected the habitat of an endangered fish species. In Ayutthaya, Thailand, Nestlé partnered with the Youth Water Guardian initiative to restore water quality by improving canal maintenance and promoting better agricultural practices, successfully rehabilitating 21 km of waterways.
In Derbyshire, UK, Nestlé tackled the issue of river diversion that had disrupted fish migration and impacted local biodiversity. By supporting the restoration of the River Ecclesbourne to its original channel, the company has re-opened over 28 km of river and tributaries, benefiting various fish species. These projects reflect Nestlé's dedication to effective water management and its broader goal of advancing regenerative food systems to create a positive environmental impact globally.
