Making Steel Greener

Chemical engineer Rohan Akolkar, along with his research team at Case Western Reserve University, is leading a project to develop a new zero-carbon, electrochemical process for producing iron metal from ore. The aim is to eliminate harmful greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional blast-furnace ironmaking and transition to a new electrolytic-iron production process. The current ironmaking process involves combining carbon and iron ore at high temperatures, which results in significant carbon dioxide emissions. Akolkar's team has devised a unique molten salt electrolysis method that eliminates the use of carbon, offering a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to iron production. The Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded the project funding as part of its broader $135 million initiative to reduce industrial carbon pollution and work towards a net-zero emissions economy by 2050. The success of this research could have a transformative impact on the steel industry and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.

This should be endorsed and be encouraged. If this is done in large scale it's going to have a great impact on reducing carbon emissions.
