Wuhan, the famous Covid city, has now caught the attention due to the experiment of driverless cars. 500 taxis drive around the city with no drivers, and next month 1000 more robot taxis are coming to the roads. The company that operates them is the tech giant, Baidu, which owns the most accurate navigation map in China.

Across China, 16 or more cities have allowed companies to test driverless vehicles on public roads, and at least 19 Chinese automakers and their suppliers are competing to establish global leadership in the field.

At the same time, Tesla also made a deal with Baidu for lane-level navigation services for Tesla cars in China. (Previous it was only road-level navigation) One big step closer to launching the full-self driving (FSD) technology and joining the driverless car experiment.

The China Society of Automotive Engineers forecasts that 20% of the cars sold in China in 2030 will be completely driverless and that another 70% will have advanced assisted driving technology. And this number also represents how quickly carmakers in China are shifting to electric vehicles.

Disregarding the political reason, Baidu’s driverless robot taxi experiments and EV’s prosperity in China represent a big step towards its carbon-neutral goal.

Baidu's driverless EV experiment in China shows significant progress in autonomous technology, promising reduced emissions and better traffic management. However, safety concerns and high costs might slow adoption, impacting environmental benefits and public trust. We can iron out these issues though
