China has made groundbreaking advancements in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology, developing batteries that charge in just 10 minutes and can power cars for hundreds of miles before needing to be recharged. The International Energy Agency (IEA) lauded these developments but raised concerns about China's dominance in the supply chain of crucial battery materials, which could disrupt global net zero initiatives due to geopolitical tensions or extreme weather events. Chinese battery company CATL introduced the Shenxing battery, capable of delivering 400km of range from a ten-minute charge, and later announced the Shenxing Plus with a range of 600 miles between recharges. These innovations address range anxiety and reduce the frequency and cost of recharging, potentially accelerating the adoption of EVs. However, the IEA warns of China's control over essential minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, and copper, crucial for battery production, posing a risk to global energy transitions. China's dominance extends beyond batteries to other green energy technologies like solar panels and wind turbines, emphasizing its pivotal role in the global energy landscape.
