The anabiosis of a change-maker. Welcome back!

Early this year, one of our change-makers Renewcell filed for bankruptcy. It was heartbreaking to see the world’s first industrial-scale textile-to-textile recycling company fail due to over-slow sales. Multiple fiber manufacturers told Renewcell the same thing: They would only buy more pulp if fashion brands put in more orders for materials made from it.

But the real gold is bound to glitter, as a traditional Chinese saying indicates.

After a few months, Renewcell returned with a new name, Circulose, which is the same as the product’s name.

Circulose is globally the only material that has been produced at scale from 100% textile waste, based on a closed-loop, chemical recycling process. The patented process to produce Circulose pulp from 100% textile waste is unique and has the potential to make the textile and fashion industry circular and enable a shift to a low-carbon economy.

“We don’t shy away from a challenge and this one is worth taking, both for the uniqueness of the patented technology and the urgency of scaling circular solutions for the entire textile and fashion industry, particularly to replace virgin cotton and MMCF. We are determined to partner with key stakeholders across the value chain to together unlock the potential of the Circulose.” Clara Zverina, Principal at Altor, the company that took the first step to bring back the buried gold.

Renewcell went for bankruptcy because many fashion brands didn’t take action to reduce their carbon footprint even when they were offered options. But the clock is ticking and #wedonthavetime to wait for next season. If we don’t scale up the circular solutions now, the fashion industry will have no more seasons.

It is disheartening to see a pioneering company like Renewcell face challenges. Collaboration between fiber manufacturers and fashion brands is crucial to scale up textile recycling and advance sustainability.
