New rule compels US coal-fired power plants to capture emissions – or shut down

Coal-fired power plants would be forced to capture smokestack emissions or shut down under a rule issued on Thursday by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). New limits on greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-fired electric plants are the Biden administration’s most ambitious effort yet to roll back planet-warming pollution from the power sector, the nation’s second-largest contributor to the climate crisis. The rules are a key part of Joe Biden’s pledge to eliminate carbon pollution from the electricity sector by 2035 and economy-wide by 2050.

This is HUGE news for the fight against climate change. The EPA finally taking a stand against dirty coal plants is a major step in the right direction.

Coming up with rules on the fines that will be imposed on companies emitting waste is one of the many ways that will help reduce pollution..The US is doing a good job.

Might prove easier to modify existing plants to run entirely on clean hydrogen fuel that doesn’t produce emissions.

@zelda_ninga_442 Yes, this will be a viable solution & might prove easier in some cases than trying to retrofit existing plants with carbon capture technology.

This is a significant step in the transition away from high-emission coal power in the United States. Forcing plants to either invest in carbon capture technology or cease operations sends a strong regulatory signal to accelerate decarbonization of the electricity sector.

@walter_lungayi Proposed regulations to cap the amounts of planet-heating pollution from US power plants could help.

@walter_lungayi Yes, it's definitely a big step towards reducing carbon emissions in the US and addressing climate change concerns.
