India plans to halt new coal-fired power plants

India is reportedly planning to remove a key clause from its National Electricity Policy (NEP) that would have allowed for the construction of new coal-fired power plants. This move would make China the only major economy open to fresh requests for significant new coal-fired capacity. India and China together account for about 80% of all active coal projects, and this policy change would represent a significant boost to the fight against climate change. The proposed policy revision would not impact the 28.2 GW of coal-based power currently under construction, but it would halt the development of any new projects beyond those already in the pipeline. The final draft of the NEP, if approved by the federal cabinet, will guide India's policymaking on energy over the next decade. This policy change could also impact long-term coal prices and miners in Indonesia, Australia, and South Africa, as India is the world's second-largest coal importer. Bearing in mind what Indians go through due to air pollution, this is one of the best decisions in this decade.

India's autonomous decision to let coal stay in the ground is definitely a big win in the fight against the climate catastrophe.China should also rethink and have a complete closure of the dirty business.
