The Interceptor is the first scalable solution for intercepting plastic pollution from rivers.

Smolenaers Constructie en Plaatwerk Bv, Nederweert The Netherlands, is participating in the construction of the Ocean Clean Up 'Interceptor'. The Ocean Cleanup wants to use the Interceptor to tackle the 1000 most polluting rivers, which are responsible for about 80 percent of the plastic pollution in the ocean, by the end of 2025. "To really rid the oceans of plastic, we need to clean up the legacy and close the tap so that no more plastic can reach the oceans. By combining our marine cleaning technology with the Interceptor, the solutions now exist to address both sides of the equation, "said Boyan Slat, founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup. More than 50,000 kg per day The Interceptor is the first scalable solution for intercepting plastic pollution from rivers and can be deployed worldwide. It can collect 50,000 kg of waste per day, increasing to 100,000 kg per day in optimal conditions. Four Interceptors have been built to date; two systems are already operational in Jakarta (Indonesia) and Klang (Malaysia). A third system will be installed in Vietnam in Can Tho in the Mekong Delta (Vietnam), while the fourth system is to be deployed in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). In addition to these locations, Thailand plans to deploy an Interceptor in Bangkok, and further agreements are nearing completion, including one in LA Country (US), to kick-start the scale-up. The Interceptor is environmentally friendly and works 100 percent on solar energy, lithium-ion batteries on board make it possible to work day and night without noise or exhaust fumes. The system is anchored to the river bed to use the natural flow of the river to collect the plastic and is designed for 24/7 autonomous operation. The floating barrier used to channel the waste into the system only covers part of the river; it will not interfere with other ships and will not harm the safety of other ships or impede the movement of wildlife - essential requirements when working in major rivers. An on-board computer connected to the internet monitors system performance, energy consumption and the condition of the components.
